Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis
What is Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis?
Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis is a surgical procedure that involves reattaching the biceps tendon to the humerus bone in the upper arm. The biceps muscle has two tendons, one of which attaches to the shoulder joint (the long head) and the other which attaches to the elbow joint (the short head). The long head of the biceps tendon passes through the shoulder joint and is often a source of shoulder pain and discomfort.
In Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis, the long head of the biceps tendon is detached from the shoulder joint and reattached to the humerus bone. This is typically done using a small incision and specialized instruments that allow the shoulder surgeon to access and reattach the tendon.
Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis is a relatively safe and effective procedure, and it is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Recovery time can vary, but most patients can return to normal activities within several weeks of the procedure. However, as with any surgery, there are risks involved, and patients should discuss their options with their shoulder surgeon at LALL Orthopedics + to determine if Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis is the best course of treatment for their specific case.
When is Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis indicated?
Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis is typically indicated for individuals who have persistent pain or weakness in the shoulder due to problems with the long head of the biceps tendon. Some common indications for Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis may include:
- Biceps tendonitis: Inflammation of the long head of the biceps tendon can cause pain and discomfort in the shoulder.
- Biceps instability: When the biceps tendon is not securely attached to the shoulder, it can cause instability and weakness in the arm.
- Biceps tears: Partial or complete tears of the biceps tendon can cause pain and weakness in the shoulder.
- Rotator cuff tears: Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis may also be indicated for individuals with rotator cuff tears who have persistent pain or weakness in the shoulder despite non-surgical treatments.
In general, Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis is considered when non-surgical treatments such as rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications have not effectively resolved the pain or discomfort in the shoulder. Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis may also be considered as part of a larger surgical procedure, such as rotator cuff repair.
It’s important to note that not all individuals with biceps tendonitis, instability, or tears are candidates for Birmingham Biceps Tenodesis, and the decision to undergo the procedure should be made in consultation with an orthopedic shoulder surgeon. The shoulder surgeons at LALL Orthopedics + will evaluate the individual’s condition and recommend the most appropriate course of treatment.
